Hobart

Separated from the mainland by the narrow but storm-tossed waters of Bass Strait, the climate of Tasmania, Australia’s most southerly State, most closely resembles that of cooler Europe. Summer lasts from December to February when the average maximum temperature at sea level is 21 °C. Winter is from June to August with an average maximum temperature at sea level of 12 °C. Inland, temperatures are much cooler. Tasmania's reputation in Australia for having high rainfall, however, differs from the true situation: several sections of inland Tasmania, together with Flinders Island, were declared drought-affected areas by the state government on 1 May 2007. Tasmania now produces some of Australia’s most outstanding cool climate wines and has, in particular, excels at producing sparkling wines with creamy textures and beautiful beading, created from classic varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.
